The Evil That Is the DMCA

Much has been written about what's wrong with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). After all, it's been used to jail programmers, threaten professors, and censor publications, and because of it, foreign scientists have avoided traveling to the U.S. and prominent researchers have withheld their work. Imagine if all the major automobile makers required all buyers of their products to accept a contract along the following lines:

1. You may not open the hood of this vehicle.

2. You may not make the minor modifications necessary to operate this vehicle in any country other than the United States.

3. If you find a safety defect in this vehicle, you may not report it to any third party.
4. If you violate any of terms 1 through 3, you can be sent to prison for up to ten years.

Circumvention of copyright protection systems

Let's face it, if you use Microsoft Windows, odds are you have found the need to use a crack for a particular piece of software, either through lack of funds or just procrastination; you never got around to registering it, but you were gonna, honest! *wink*

Well, before you take such things lightly, take a look at what the laws of one particular country (the United States) has to say about it.

I wont suggest you stop using your computer just because you cannot afford the tools you need, that would make me a hypocrite. I only want you to understand the law and be able to take the proper precautions. "Do what you want, but harm no one".
